Lahaina Update 2025 - OPEN FOR TRAVEL

Lahaina After the Wildfires: What You Can Still Experience on Maui

Aloha, travelers.
Lahaina, one of the most beloved towns on Maui, was hit by an unprecedented wildfire disaster in August 2023 as most of you know. The damage was devastating, especially to Lahaina’s historic district, which has long been a cultural and tourism hub. However, despite the destruction, the spirit of Lahaina and its community remains strong, and many areas of Maui are still open for tourism. In this post, we’ll provide an update on Lahaina’s recovery, how you can support the local community, and the many experiences still waiting for you on the island.

The Wildfires: A Tragic Event

On August 8, 2023, the people of Lahaina, Maui, were caught in the path of a catastrophic wildfire that ravaged much of the town. Fueled by high winds and dry conditions, the fires spread rapidly, destroying homes, businesses, and landmarks. Tragically, lives were lost, and thousands of residents were forced to flee. The historic district, known for its vibrant arts scene, Lahaina Banyan Tree, and scenic harbor, was particularly impacted, leaving a deep scar in the heart of the community.

In response, the state of Hawaii and numerous organizations have rallied to support the recovery process. As of now, over $10 million in aid has been pledged to help displaced residents rebuild their homes and lives. Recovery is well underway, and while the town still has a long road ahead, the resilience and strength of Lahaina’s people are unmatched.

On the other hand, there are conspiracy theories I have heard from locals... reach out if you are interested in hearing them. I hope they are not true... but this world is crazy as we all know.

What’s Open and What You Can Still Do in Lahaina

While the historic district is still recovering, Maui as a whole remains open to visitors, and many parts of the island are welcoming travelers. Lahaina is not closed to tourism, but there are areas that are still under construction or closed for recovery. Here’s what you can still experience:

1. Ka'anapali Beach

One of Maui’s most famous beaches, Ka'anapali, is just a short drive from Lahaina. Known for its golden sands, clear waters, and world-class resorts, it remains open and offers plenty to do, from swimming and sunbathing to dining at local restaurants and enjoying water sports. Ka'anapali’s beachfront resorts are operating, providing a great base for visitors looking to experience the island’s beauty.

2. Napili Bay and Kapalua

Just a few miles from Lahaina, Napili Bay and Kapalua are two of Maui’s most serene beach areas, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. Whether you want to snorkel, relax by the turquoise waters, or hike through lush trails, these areas remain open and are less affected by the fires.

3. Lahaina Harbor

While parts of the Lahaina Historic District are still closed, the Lahaina Harbor area remains operational, and many boat tours, including whale watching, snorkeling, and sunset cruises, are running. If you’ve planned to explore the waters around Maui, this is still a great location to launch your adventure.

4. Beaches in South Maui: Wailea, Makena, and Kihei

For those looking to explore beyond Lahaina, South Maui has plenty of options. Wailea Beach, Makena Beach, and Kihei are all open and offer gorgeous beaches, excellent dining, and fantastic opportunities for snorkeling and other water activities.

5. Haleakalā National Park

Haleakalā, the towering dormant volcano in Maui’s upcountry, is a must-see. The national park is open, and visitors can hike through its stunning landscapes, see the sunrise from the summit, or explore the island’s diverse ecosystems. Haleakalā offers a peaceful escape from the recovery efforts happening on the coast.

Supporting the Community Through Tourism

Tourism is a key industry for Maui, and the local businesses are a vital part of the recovery process. By visiting Maui and Lahaina, you’re not just experiencing the beauty of the island—you’re supporting the people who live and work here. Many businesses that were impacted by the fires are slowly reopening, offering food, crafts, and unique experiences.

If you do visit, please be mindful of the recovery process and show respect to the community and the ongoing rebuilding efforts. Your presence can make a real difference to those working hard to restore Lahaina.

What You Can Do to Help Lahaina’s Recovery

If you’re planning a trip to Maui, consider contributing directly to the recovery by:

  • Booking tours, excursions, or accommodations in areas that are open to tourists.
  • Dining at locally-owned restaurants or shopping at small businesses that are slowly reopening.
  • Donating to recovery funds that are helping Lahaina families rebuild their lives. Many organizations are raising money specifically to aid those who were impacted by the fires.
  • Respecting the areas still under recovery, and avoid traveling to areas that are closed for safety reasons.
  • Booking Rental Cars through local vendors like I have posted on my website home page - Hawaii Discount Rental Car.
