The West Side of Maui Itinerary & More

Lahaina is open for tourism. A lot of people think Lahaina is a ghost town because of the fires, even though tourism has slowed down, Kaanapali is booming. This strip of resorts and restaurants is a boujee part of Maui that I recommend to at least go to visit if it is not in the budget to stay. The Westin Kaanapali looked like the fanciest Maui getaway in this area. (Check out my YouTube video to see the rural part of western Maui.)

I have been to Maui five times now and the one food place they truly do not have anywhere else is 'The Cinnamon Roll Place'. You can find more information about this place here: Cinnamon Roll Place Website. It is located in Kihei and it does get very busy. I recommend showing up right before they open so you will not be waiting long. (show up around 5:45 - 5:50 A.M.)

Big Beach is my favorite beach on Maui. Also known as Makena Beach, is one of Maui's most stunning and expansive beaches, located on the island's south side in Makena State Park. Here's what you need to know:

Key Details:

  • Length: About 1.5 miles long and 100 feet wide, making it one of Maui's largest beaches.
  • Location: Approximately 10 minutes south of Wailea, near the town of Kihei.
  • Sand: Soft, golden sand with clear, turquoise waters.
  • Facilities:
    • Parking lots (limited spaces, so arrive early).
    • Restrooms and portable toilets.
    • Picnic areas.
    • Lifeguards are often on duty.

Activities:

  • Swimming: The water is calm on good days, but it can have strong shore breaks, so caution is advised.
  • Snorkeling: Not ideal due to strong currents, but nearby coves in Makena State Park are better for this.
  • Bodyboarding/Skimboarding: Popular when the waves are right.
  • Relaxing/Sunbathing: The wide beach offers plenty of space.

Safety Tips:

  • Waves: Known for powerful shore breaks, earning it the nickname "Breakneck Beach." Always check the conditions and avoid the water if unsure.
  • Sun Protection: Bring sunscreen and an umbrella, as shade is limited.
  • Hydration: There are no nearby stores, so pack water and snacks.

Nearby Attractions:

  • Little Beach: A smaller, clothing-optional beach just over the hill on the north side.
  • Molokini Crater: Accessible via tours for snorkeling and diving.
  • Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve: Great for snorkeling and exploring lava rock formations.
