Mokulele Airlines: Cheaper Option $80 one way (random flight times)
9 person plane, no TSA, some might think these are sketchy... I have flown on them a few times and I actually prefer them now over islands that Hawaiian Airlines flies to because of no TSA.
Lanai Airlines: $160 one way (consistent flight times)
Luxurious jet provides the best transportation to and from Lanai. Complimentary water is also provided. This was the best airline experience I have had so far.
Exploring Lanai: The Ultimate Guide
Lanai is as country as it gets. If you visit, YOU NEED a 4x4 (if you plan to leave Lanai City). The island's rugged terrain and off-the-beaten-path attractions require a reliable vehicle. You can book a discounted rental car on all islands through the link on my website (on home page), which provides exclusive discounts through my partnership with Hawaii Discount Car Rental.
Despite its small size, Lanai offers plenty of activities, and you can cover most of them in just a day trip. I wouldn’t recommend staying longer unless you’re here to golf at Manele or going for a super relaxing vacation. I only say this if you are looking for more action because Lanai has limited accommodations and entertainment options. However, if you do decide to stay overnight, there are two main options:
Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort – A more affordable, tranquil retreat focusing on wellness and relaxation.
Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay – A luxurious, oceanfront resort with high-end amenities and exclusive access to the prestigious Manele Golf Course.
Free Things to Do in Lanai
1. Golf at Sensei Lanai Course
If you bring your own clubs, you can golf for free at the Sensei Lanai Course. This is a great way to experience the island’s serene landscapes while enjoying a round of golf without spending a dime.
2. Visit Lanai’s Top Beaches
Polihua Beach – A secluded, pristine beach perfect for sunbathing and escaping the crowds. Not recommended for swimming due to strong currents. The shorebreak is identical to Sandy's. On the weekends I hear it is the spot to go on Lanai, if you want to go during the week... chances are you will be the only person there.
Hulopo'e Beach – The best beach on the island, offering excellent snorkeling opportunities and breathtaking scenery. Located near the Four Seasons Resort. I actually went back to this beach twice in the same day to swim.
Shipwreck Beach – Famous for the remains of a WWII-era ship resting offshore, this beach offers a unique landscape for exploration and photography. This is a must-see if you visit Lanai because it is truly surreal to see an abandoned ship from the old days. I did
This is a must-visit for animal lovers. The sanctuary is home to nearly 600 rescued cats (mostly from the Lahaina fires), providing a safe haven where visitors can interact with and support the adorable felines. It’s free to visit, but donations are encouraged. They do give you a free bag of food as well.
4. Off-Roading Adventure at Garden of the Gods (Keahiakawelo)
One of the most surreal landscapes in Hawaii, this otherworldly rock garden is best explored with a 4x4 vehicle. The red rock formations create a Mars-like environment, making it a photographer’s dream.
Additional Things to Do on Lanai
5. Hike to Pu'u Pehe (Sweetheart Rock)
A short but scenic hike near Hulopo'e Beach that leads to one of Lanai’s most iconic landmarks. The dramatic sea cliffs and ocean views make it a must-see at sunrise or sunset.
6. Visit Lanai City’s Local Shops & Cafés
Lanai City is small but charming, with boutique shops, local cafés, and art galleries showcasing the island’s unique culture. Stop by Blue Ginger Café for a bite to eat or visit the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center to learn more about the island’s history. We ate at Ganotisi's and it was prestine local grinds.
7. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving
The waters around Lanai are crystal clear and home to vibrant marine life. Book a snorkeling or diving tour to explore Lanai’s famous underwater lava tubes and reefs. Pacwhale Eco Adventures seems to be the best snorkeling tour offered on Lanai. I highly suggest bringing your own equipment to go snorkeling at Manele Bay and Hulopo'e Bay.
