Big Island Two Day Itinerary - Waterslide Hike & Volcano

The Ultimate Two-Day Big Island Adventure: Lava, Waterfalls, and Hidden Gems

This itinerary is for extreme adventurers looking to experience the absolute best of the Big Island in just two days. From a morning hike to a hidden waterslide, to a legendary pancake house, to witnessing an active volcano at night (IF ERUPTING), this action-packed trip will leave you in awe. End your adventure with a relaxing stop at a black sand beach and even enjoy luxury hotel amenities before flying back to Oahu.

Day 1 Morning: The Secret Waterslide Hike

Start your day with an off-the-beaten-path adventure to the Secret Waterslide Hike...a hidden gem deep in the Waipi’o Forest featuring natural water chutes formed by ancient lava flows. This hike shows you the true beauty of the Waipio Valley and a unique look at Hawaiian History.

How to Find the Secret Waterslide Hike:

This hike is not officially marked, and access often requires a local recommendation. However, if you manage to find it, here’s what you need to know:

  • Expect Local Encounters: You will likely meet locals at the entrance who may ask for a small fee. Be respectful and prepared with cash.

  • Five Simple Directions to Get There: (As detailed in my YouTube video)

    1. Get to White Rd: This is the trailhead leading into the Waipi’o Forest.

    2. Encounter Donovan and Pay the Local Tax: Donovan is a well-known Big Island figure who often collects a small fee for access.

    3. Follow the Trail: The path can be muddy and overgrown, so wear good hiking shoes.

    4. Cross the Bridge and Follow the Tunnels: These features make the hike even more adventurous. (wear shoes because of nails)

    5. Arrive at the Secret Waterslide in the Middle of the Waipi’o Forest: Enjoy the refreshing, natural waterslide! (bring a tube to make the slide more fun)

Day 1 Afternoon: Ken’s Pancake House

After your morning hike, fuel up at Ken’s Pancake House in Hilo. This iconic local spot is famous for its massive pancakes, loco moco, and an old-school diner vibe. Whether you go for a plate of macadamia nut pancakes or their famous Portuguese sausage breakfast, you won’t regret stopping here. My favorite is the country omelet and the coffee shake.

Day 1 Evening: Witness an Active Volcano at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a must-visit in general, but experiencing it at night while Kīlauea is erupting is truly insane. Seeing the lava glow under the dark sky is one of the most surreal sights in the world.

Key Tips for Visiting the Volcano:

  • Be Prepared for Hazardous Air Quality: Volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide can be harmful. Bring a mask, gator, or balaclava to protect your lungs. I didn’t wear one, and while it’s doable, I highly recommend it... especially if you're venturing past the gates.

  • Wear Protective Eyewear: The ash and debris can be irritating to the eyes, so sunglasses or protective glasses are a good idea.

  • Venturing Past the Gates: The closest you can get to the lava is beyond the designated viewing areas. This is generally not recommended due to unstable terrain and hazardous conditions, but if you're feeling adventurous and cautious, the view is absolutely mind-blowing.

  • Act Fast: The road leading up to the lava flow is splitting rapidly due to seismic activity. While it's still possible to cross, it’s uncertain how much longer it will be safe. If you're planning to see this up close, go as soon as possible before access is completely lost.

  • Nighttime Visits: Seeing the lava glow in the dark is an unreal experience, but the terrain becomes more treacherous. If you go at night, make sure you have a high-powered flashlight and sturdy hiking shoes.

Overnight Stay: Airbnb at the Base of the Volcano

After an unforgettable night at the volcano, stay at an Airbnb near the base of Kīlauea. There are some incredible and unique options, including jungle cabins and eco-friendly retreats, where you can fall asleep with the faint rumble of volcanic activity in the distance. (airbnb link featured in description of my youtube video.)

Day 2 Morning: Punalu’u Black Sand Beach & Final Stop Before Flying Home

On your way back to Kona Airport, stop by Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, one of the most stunning black sand beaches in Hawaii. It’s also one of the best places to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles lounging on the shore. (if you go early in the morning chances are you will be the only one there.)

If you have extra time before your flight, consider stopping by a luxury hotel with a day pass from ResortPass.com to unwind in a five-star resort pool or spa for a few hours before heading to the airport.
